As we settle into the depths of Winter, let’s take a look at some of our favourite holiday destinations...

Ian

My top 5:

The following choices are hugely influenced as much by the friendliness of the locals as much as the scenery, food and drink, etc.

Verona – achingly beautiful place. Amazing colosseum, superb food. Better than Florence, Venice and Bologna (and I love Florence, Venice and Bologna).

Amsterdam – easy to get to, easy to navigate, quirky. A great blend of culture and pub culture. Superb museums.

Malaga –mazing climate (nearly the whole year round) and excellent food. Moorish influence adds to the experience.

Munich – beautiful architecture and an extremely friendly place. Best beer.

Bordeaux – the Edinburgh of France, only hotter. Cosmopolitan, friendly and pretty.

Majorca continues to be a firm favourite for me and my family. We love the island and all it has to offer. Spring continues to see the hillier north of the island host an annual cycle trip for me with a group of friends and in the summer Pollenca has been a home from home for the family with beautiful beaches, accommodation and a few nice spots by the sea for a refreshment, or two.

It’s so difficult to choose a favourite but Croatia certainly impressed when we went there a few years ago. We were lucky enough to visit with another family who had relatives there so we got to see the authentic Croatia beyond the main tourist spots and it was absolutely stunning. Croatian wine is a well-kept secret (they chose well not to export) and the food is fresh and delicious, although I was served their favourite, octopus salad, more times than I might have liked!

My top four places:

For a European city break definitely Lisbon- amazing food, wine (for people who like wine – I prefer gin) and people. Such a nice city to wander around and loads of things to do. Would highly recommend a day trip to Sintra which is just an hour away by train.
Somewhere a little further afield would have to be Cape Town- just an overall amazing place to visit.
New York - I previously spent time living there so going back is always a treat. Amazing buzz around the city and no shortage of places to see or visit.
Recently I visited Montenegro and it was quite possibly one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited. I have never seen water so blue!

Favourite holiday destination is Ibiza

Visited 10 times

I’ve been in my early 20’s, late 20’s and 30’s and it’s been a (very) different experience each time.

It’s got the perfect mix of scenery, culture, nightlife and cool places to eat and drink.

The prices are crazy so short stays are advisable!

The best party I’ve ever been to was there.

Fiona

California – great weather, people and shopping, what more can I say…  Y’all need to visit!

Colin

Can confirm Disneyland Paris in 40 degrees is definitely NOT going to make the list.

Michele

For lifestyle – Australia

For fun in the sun – Sailing the Greek Islands

For culture – Mexico (Mayan Ruins), South Africa, (Capetown and beyond) or China (Beijing and the Great Wall)

For relaxation – Tenerife or Mauritius

For adventure – Dubai, or an African Game Reserve

For a city break – New York

But there is no place like home… Donegal!

Nathalie

Thailand – Very far away but you can live like king/queen on a beggar’s budget! Extremely beautiful and you will never run out of things to do and see. I recommend the elephant sanctuaries and visiting every single island.

Barcelona – Perfect blend of a cultural city break, a beach holiday and a party holiday! Gorgeous architecture and tapas - what more could you want.

Belfast and the Causeway Coast – Might be biased but Belfast is the best fun with very friendly locals ;). Visit the causeway coast to see the Giant’s Causeway and white sand beaches – Thailand has nothing on Costa del Portrush.
