Head of Risk - 12 Month Contract - Edinburgh

W&A is working with a newly established national energy organisation is seeking an experienced Head of Risk to lead the development and delivery of a best-in-class enterprise risk management framework.

Working on a hybrid basis from either Aberdeen or Edinburgh (around two days per week in the office), this 12-month contract offers an excellent opportunity to shape the risk agenda of a pivotal public energy body.

The Opportunity

This is a senior leadership role responsible for building the organisation’s risk capability from the ground up. The successful candidate will design and implement the enterprise risk framework, with particular focus on financial and investment risk, ensuring robust oversight across a diverse portfolio of investments, guarantees, and funding structures.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and embed a comprehensive risk management framework aligned with the organisation’s strategic mandate.
• Define and maintain risk appetite statements in line with Board objectives.
• Lead the identification and monitoring of credit, market, liquidity, and counterparty risks.
• Oversee stress testing, scenario analysis, and risk-adjusted performance reporting.
• Maintain and report the strategic risk register to the Board and Audit & Risk Committee.
• Provide second-line oversight of investment proposals and portfolio performance.
• Establish risk policies, standards, and procedures.
• Build internal capability and foster a strong, proactive risk culture across the business.

What You’ll Bring

• Extensive experience in financial risk management gained in investment banking, infrastructure finance, or public investment institutions.
• Strong technical expertise in credit, market, and portfolio risk modelling.
• Comprehensive understanding of UK regulatory frameworks and public-private investment structures.
• Relevant professional qualifications such as RM, CFA, or PRM.

Package & Details

• Day rate: £900–£950 (inside IR35).
• 12-month contract with potential extension.
• Hybrid working: approximately two days per week in Aberdeen or Edinburgh office.
