Government legislation being developed will require our client to operate an internal control attestation process over financial reporting (“UK SOX”). A project is being initiated to implement the necessary procedures to follow this legislation.  We are now assisting them in the search for a new permanent Manager to fulfil the role of Manager – IT.

Role

The role holder will be part of the project team who lead and work with the business through the implementation in the following phases

  • Risk assessment and prioritisation of processes/balances to frame the project scope;
  • Documentation of existing processes and controls;
  • Testing, review and assessment of the effectiveness of controls, including rectification as required; and
  • Attestation and reporting of results.

This role focuses on IT and will support work around IT controls and environments. However, the role holder will also support the consideration of areas outside of IT. The work is expected to drive an evolution of the internal control environment, and it is anticipated that full implementation of UK SOX will be achieved in Q1 2024.

Responsible For

  • Assessing the quality of existing documentation and controls for assigned in-scope processes through partner engagement, review of documentation, and practical workshops
  • Challenging existing documentation and controls, advising on deficiencies and facilitating rectification, to ensure processes and controls are upgraded to meet UK SOX standard
  • Performing independent testing of the design and operating efficiency of controls and reporting the results. For controls which are ineffective or requiring improvement, work collaboratively with the business to agree improvements required and appropriate timeframes for implementation and retesting
  • Being responsible for the attestation process to enable the certification of controls and deficiencies, and action plans, to meet UK SOX requirements
  • Working collegiately as part of the SOX implementation project team, supporting the overall deliveries and assisting with other project activities as required to ensure the success of the project

Experience

  • Qualified accountant, auditor, or operational risk specialist with deep experience of internal control frameworks

In addition the work is expected to result in a significant streamlining and strengthening of the internal control environment, and enhancement of the controls culture within the business.
