Dress Code for Interview

A client of ours recently gave me feedback that one of our candidates had been unsuccessful at interview. Nothing unique in that I hear our competitors say! Whilst it’s not news the candidate or we like to hear in recruitment, obviously it’s not uncommon for people to miss out on jobs.  What was more unique about this instance was that included in the overall feedback was the throw away comment that of the four candidates they interviewed, my candidate was the only one not to wear a tie at interview. To be absolutely clear, this wasn’t the reason the candidate was unsuccessful – ultimately they didn’t perform well enough during the interview process.  However it made me realise that within that one statement many assumptions (conscious and unconscious) have potentially been made - by the prospective employer, the candidate and myself.
