In this series, we interview international accountants working in Edinburgh to gain insight into their experiences of moving to Scotland and securing contract work. The aim of this series is to provide accountants who are thinking about a move abroad with an understanding of the processes, and hopefully offer some helpful tips.
At Wilkinson & Associates we deal with many international candidates who are looking for new opportunities in Scotland. Unlike many of our competitors, we start working with candidates before their move to the UK. Wilkinson & Associates will contact candidates several times to provide an explanation of the Edinburgh job market, understand what the candidate is looking for, answer any questions they might have and, if appropriate, start speaking to our clients about the candidate before you arrive. We send a relocation guide that has information on accommodation, transport, banking and utilities. Closer to the candidates time of arrival we can discuss potential roles. We do everything we can to make sure our candidates are informed and comfortable with their move, and aim to meet all candidates within the first few days of their arrival in Scotland.

It has been a busy 12 months for the permanent team within Wilkinson & Associates and all of this has been a great barometer for a general improvement in the recruitment marketplace. At W&A we have always prided ourselves on a quality based approach to recruitment, providing genuine consultancy to our clients and candidates and importantly, longevity in terms of relationships. Continued success means we have recently been able to add to our team and we have been delighted to recruit Ross McQuarrie and Mairianne Kpedekpo to further develop our offering in the Permanent Accountancy & Finance space.

The second most common question we get asked when placing a contractor in an interim role after ‘When do I start?’ is ‘How do I get paid?’
When contracting through Wilkinson & Associates you essentially have two options, you can either operate under an Umbrella Company or you can set up your own Limited Company. There are pros and cons to both options and a simple Google search will produce thousands of hits for comparison tables and take-home pay calculators.

Great night last Thursday over at the EICC with Guy, Colin and Ross representing W&A in support of the annual SportsQuest Dinner.
Now in its 18th year, this black tie fundraising dinner is based around a sports quiz, with teams of ten competing to be champions by demonstrating their knowledge of sport through four rounds of questions. It’s great fun, extremely popular and has become one of the highlights of the social calender. Over the years, the event has now raised over £1.5m for charity, with half of the money raised this year going to The Edinburgh Headway Group (a local charity that provides a rehabilitation centre in the grounds of the Astley Ainslie Hospital for head injured patients and support for their families) and the other half going to Children’s Aid (Scotland) Limited who distribute money to deserving causes to provide vital equipment and services to a large range of children’s charities in Scotland.
