Our temporary desk consultant Caro Graham is leaving us at the end of this month to pursue work more closely linked to her HR specialism. Caro has supported us for the last 3 years, initially in the Operations team and more recently working on the temporary desk.

Love them or loathe them they’re here to stay for the foreseeable. Technology and new means of testing have added a different slant to interviews, which is to be welcomed and the format can vary from employer to employer. Likewise some businesses embrace change and innovation more than others, however interview content and particularly interview questions don’t appear to have evolved a great deal. At Wilkinson & Associates we always prepare our candidates for interview as best we can, although as we all know – you’re never quite prepared for the weird and wonderful questions you might be asked. I’m sure we’ve all heard the classic – “If you were an animal, which one would you be?” (Disclaimer - I’ve actually never known anyone to be asked this question!)

On January 17th ICAS launched their Top 100 Young CAs competition. This follows on from their successful 35 CAs under 35 initiative which has run in recent years and will again reward the achievements of young CAs.

After 20 years recruiting senior finance and accountancy staff in Scotland it still amazes me how much the markets, clients and skills sets have changed and evolved since I started out.

A client of ours recently gave me feedback that one of our candidates had been unsuccessful at interview. Nothing unique in that I hear our competitors say! Whilst it’s not news the candidate or we like to hear in recruitment, obviously it’s not uncommon for people to miss out on jobs. What was more unique about this instance was that included in the overall feedback was the throw away comment that of the four candidates they interviewed, my candidate was the only one not to wear a tie at interview. To be absolutely clear, this wasn’t the reason the candidate was unsuccessful – ultimately they didn’t perform well enough during the interview process. However it made me realise that within that one statement many assumptions (conscious and unconscious) have potentially been made - by the prospective employer, the candidate and myself.

‘Women returning to work’ is a priority item on many people’s agenda at the moment. Many corporate Diversity & Inclusion policies are setting increased targets for women in the work force and a greater representation at Board level. A key aspect of enabling this change is the development of a strategy that attracts women back into the workforce post maternity leave. There are many different factors for families to take account of, not least the cost of child care to return to work.
