Aberdeen

With its sparkling granite buildings and beautiful architecture, Scotland's third largest city is one of its most scenic and it offers great opportunities for qualified accountants.

There are a number of treasures on Aberdeen's doorstep, including both the malt whisky and the castle trails.  The coastline of this North-Eastern Scottish city intersperses vast beaches with picturesque fishing towns and dramatic cliff top scenery.

Working in Aberdeen, you will discover that the city offers a great range of opportunities from its vibrant sports and social scene to its cultural events calendar.  The people of Aberdeen enjoy a high quality of life and low unemployment.

Since the 1970's, the city has been the hub of the UK's energy industry and is now known as the "Energy Capital of Europe".  All of the major oil industry players and many of the minor ones have offices in Aberdeen.  Companies such as BP, ConocoPhillips, Shell, Total, ChevronTexaco, Amec, Halliburton, KBR, Kvaerner and The Wood Group are all present. In addition, Aberdeen also has a booming seaport and tourism industry.  The whole Grampian region houses traditional industries including farming and fishing, whisky and woollens, as well as tomorrow's industries such as food processing and electronics.

With a cosmopolitan population of just over 200,000 people, Aberdeen is the ideal destination for accountants looking for a smaller city to live in than Glasgow or Edinburgh where there is still the potential opportunity to have an impressive global player on their CV.

Rented accommodation is easy to obtain in Aberdeen as there are a lot of international employees and a minimum 6 month lease is common.  House sharing is also common.  A large number of contractors work in Aberdeen but live further afield in the UK.  Many clients appreciate this and allow mid-Monday morning starts and early Friday finishing for those who travel from "down south".

Aberdeen enjoys a healthy housing market which, over recent years, has enjoyed considerable capital growth.  Due to the rapid expansion of Aberdeen over the last twenty years, primarily driven by the advent of the oil industry, incomers will find that there is a distinct choice between traditional granite-built properties, typically between 70 and 150 years old, and more modern housing developments.
